Loved the article,S.D. Amusing, and reminded of village shows here in deepest Devon
My son told me about a book he heard via a podcast ; I searched for it, but no luck. I clicked onto your posting about herring fisher women [as this elusive book was about wives who carried their menfolk out to the boats to save them getting wet and therefore hypothermia]. Suddenly your ‘name’ rang a bell. I read further and yes, I remember you from a past life … Island Blogging etc. I am not sure whether I was Plaid or Shirlwin … from Australia. Just saying a big Hello:)
This blog is now bookmarked.
Hello
I was reading your article about the Newlands brothers who were killed in WW1. They were my grandmother’s family. A further boy Robert Newlands – another cousin – was also killed. My Gran had his tin plate picture in her kitchen until she died.
If you have any further information/ stories about the Traveller families in the Northern Isles would be good to hear.
Kirsten
Hello Kirsten and apologies for my long delay in replying! Thank you for sharing your family connection – that’s very poignant about the tin plate – these humble objects take on such great significance, don’t they? If I find out any more I will try and update this. Thank you again for your comment xxx
